Running your own business is hard work so thinking about your energy meter and looking for a new tariff probably isn’t high on your priority list – but perhaps it should be. Because if your business uses a lot of electricity then installing a half hourly electricity meter that provides up-to-date energy readings can mean more accurate bills – ultimately saving you money in the long run. Here’s the lowdown.
Especially designed for businesses, a half hourly (or HH) meter does exactly what it says on the tin – it sends an accurate real-time electricity reading back to your energy supplier every 30 minutes through a telephone line.
Regular and accurate readings mean you can be confident that bills reflect your actual usage, so you only pay for what you use rather than relying on potentially inaccurate estimates that could see you out of pocket.
HH meters have the added benefit of being able to give you a breakdown of the energy you consume so you can see exactly how much you use and when.
If your business uses 100kW of electricity or more in any half-hour period, then you’ll need to have an HH meter installed by law. Typically, this will apply to businesses like factories, assembly plants, printers, and big department stores.
But even if you don’t use quite as much as 100kW, businesses using around 70kW or more in any half-hour can also look into getting an HH meter.
If your business is an intensive energy user, a quick check of your last electricity bill should tell you if you already have an HH meter installed. If you do, then your MPAN (meter point administration number) or ‘s’ number will have 00 in the top left of the box shown on your statement.
A half hourly meter could save your business money. Not only will it ensure your supplier gets regular and up-to-the-minute electricity readings, it can also provide you with more information about how and when you use your energy.
Being able to break down your electricity consumption means you can start comparing tariffs based on your use and look for deals with lower prices during your peak working hours. It can also help you change habits – so for example you might choose to shift electricity sapping processes to times when rates are at their lowest.
It can also help put your electricity use into perspective and if you aren’t able to make changes in working patterns then you may decide to introduce some energy efficiency ideas.
